However, this doesn’t mean the battery will suddenly stop working after this period. Instead, it will start to lose its capacity. This means that instead of providing you with a 60 km range per charge, it might only give you 50 km or less. This gradual degradation is known as ‘capacity fade’.

The battery of an ebike typically makes up about one-third of the bike’s total cost, and without it, the bike is essentially useless. Therefore, it’s a component that you’ll want to keep in the best possible condition.

Store It Properly

eBike batteries are typically sturdy and resilient, designed to endure the most severe conditions on the roughest rides. High-quality eBikes are generally safe to ride in extremely hot or cold temperatures without affecting the battery. However, how you store your battery is what truly matters.

During the blistering hot Aussie summers, avoid leaving your bike locked up directly under the sun with the battery still inside. Either remove the battery or, at the very least, park the bike in the shade to keep it protected. The same advice applies to extremely cold temperatures and damp or wet conditions. 

Also, if you’re not using your ebike for an extended period, remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. It is recommended that you leave the charge level at around 60%. 

 

Avoid Submerging It In Water

Following smart charging etiquette is the key to optimally maintaining the life of your ebike battery. 

The aim is to prevent the battery level from dropping too low and to avoid unnecessary frequent recharges. The optimal range is between 30% – 80% of charge. Maintaining it within these parameters will be less taxing on the battery compared to regularly charging it from zero to 100% or overcharging it when there’s still ample power left.  There, of course, will be occasions when this is required. While those rare instances won’t affect the battery too much, it’s best to adhere to good practices where possible.
